2022 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid Vs 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid
2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid: Which One Is Right for Me?
With compact crossover SUV hybrids being as in-demand as they are these days, prospective buyers should be aware of just what is out there. With reliability, versatility, comfort, and convenience bundled together in one compact package, there are plenty of contenders out there for best in class, but which one is the right one for you? To help you figure that out, our staff here at Westbury Toyota have put together a short but comprehensive comparison guide between two of the top compact crossover SUVs for 2022: the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Ford Escape Hybrid.
Performance and Off-Road Capabilities
When it comes to performance and off-roading, the RAV4 has long been among the best. That has not changed with the addition of a hybrid trim, and with its advanced engine you can expect a combined net output of 219 horsepower (hp). To break it down further, the RAV4 Hybrid will come with a sealed nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery with a voltage of 244.8 volts (V), along with a HV electric motor that has a front/rear power output of 118/54 hp and torque output of 149/89 pound-feet (lb-ft). The hybrid engine is a 2.5 liter (L) Dynamic Force 4-Cylinder internal combustion engine with SPORT, NORMAL, EV, TRAIL, and ECO drive modes that is capable of 176 hp and the aforementioned combined net hp output of 219. If you go with the plug-in hybrid (RAV4 Prime), that power output ramps up to an impressive 308 hp.
In comparison, the 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid and plug-in hybrid power outputs both come in at 200 hp. The Escape also lacks in the off-roading department as well, as the RAV4 Hybrid has higher ground clearance, electronic on demand all-wheel drive (AWD), and TRAIL mode, making it more than capable of handling a bit of off-roading exploration if you feel like it.
Cargo Storage Room and Interior Features
While both of these compact crossover SUVs can seat up to five people, the 2022 RAV4 hybrid has far more cargo room than the 2002 Ford Escape Hybrid. The front/rear cargo volume for the RAV4 is 89.8/37.6 cubic feet, whereas that of the Escape is 60.8/37.5 cubic feet.
Both vehicles have 60/40 split folding rear seats to allow for ease of passenger/cargo loading, but in terms of comfort, explains Mark Putzer of Motor Biscuit, the RAV4 takes the win. The rest of the RAV4 Hybrid’s interior is just as impressive with its quality materials, construction, and striking contrast stitching.
In the RAV4 Hybrid, you can also expect to find convenient features such as a tilt/telescopic 3-spoke steering wheel that has the controls for the Multi-Information Display (MID), Bluetooth, audio, hands-free phone, and voice command. For your convenience (and that of your passengers), there are three USB ports available, one in the front storage tray and two in the front center console.
For entertainment, the RAV4 Hybrid has a 7.0-inch touchscreen along with six speakers, and will be compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. You will also get access to SiriusXM with a 3-month trial subscription. In the entertainment department, the Ford Escape Hybrid is somewhat lacking as standard features include only SiriusXM and 6 speakers, with the option of upgrading to a voice-activated touchscreen navigation system.
Which One Is Right for Me?
When it all comes down to it, the facts do not lie. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes in ahead of the 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid in terms of performance, off-road potential, cargo room, and interior comfort and convenience. The RAV4 Hybrid offers all the versatility of its gas engine brethren but grants you the renowned fuel efficiency of all of Toyota’s hybrids.
