The Importance of Transmission Fluid

As you are probably aware, tremendous forces are generated inside the many moving parts of an automobile. Your engine oil helps to absorb heat, reduce friction, and prevent dust and debris from causing damage. Your transmission fluid does the same thing, but it acts as a lubricant and heat absorber for the moving metal parts inside the transmission. In order to do its job, the transmission uses sophisticated steel joints to transfer the power generated by the engine to your wheels. Because it’s difficult to move this energy in a straight line in most cases, the transmission has to direct it around other components. This makes complex and fast-moving gears necessary. These gears must be kept cool with minimal friction.

 

How Often Should Transmission Fluid be Changed?

The general rule is that transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles. Many people never change their transmission fluid. This is possible because the transmission is thoroughly sealed. But neglecting this important maintenance task is risky. Signs that your transmission needs to be flushes include:

 

• Grinding Noises - Grinding or other noises in the transmission usually mean something has broken loose inside. This means other debris is sure to be in there as well.
• Trouble Shifting Gears - Debris in the transmission or broken gear teeth can make it harder to shift than it should be.
• Gears Slipping - Another common result of broken gear teeth is slipping gears. This is annoying at first but can be dangerous if not remedied.
• Power Surges - Slipping or poorly engaged transmission parts can slip in and out of gear, causing lurches, power loss, and power surges.

 

In most cases, these conditions can be fixed easily or prevented with regular maintenance. Letting any of these conditions develop unchecked can easily result in your getting stranded on the road, or worse.
